Vacation

I'm taking a few days off and headed west for a much needed vacation. There will be beach laziness galore and I can't wait! Before I go, I thought I'd share my latest batch of castings. These guys will get a good workin' on when I get back, but for now, BEACH TIME!

Happy weekend everybody!!

It's about Due time...

...to get my hands on one of these tops! Or all of them. I love it when designers can create variety based on one simple model. Or maybe I just want to wear nature's patterns all over my body. Either way, these tops by Due are simple with an artistic edge and I like it.

Roy's Got a Way with Dots

I went on a impromptu trip to the Art Institute and perused the Roy Lichtenstein exhibit. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. That man knows how to work some dots. Oh and the colors...above is one of my favorite color palettes amongst the many. Three words to sum it all up? Vibrant. Sarcastic. Playful. Check it out if you're in the downtown Chicago area.

I think I need to watch this movie

A movie about underwater sea creatures that I'm meant to gasp at and leave with a sense of wonder?? Um, yes please. Here is the artist's statement:

"Imagine global co-operation for a global problem. Imagine corals as the barometer of climate change. Imagine we are the pivot point. Imagine rekindling Venus.

My intent is to leave the audience with a sense of wonder for the complexity of the coral community and a deep-felt longing to see it survive.

What is apparent when you watch the film is the remarkable survival mechanisms already at play in the community of coral reefs, mechanisms that will be put to the test in the coming years. We might see ourselves as two different communities interconnected in our own survival."

-Lynette Wallworth

The movie is called Coral: Rekindling Venus and you can watch it here.

Progress

Remember when I made these guys??

Well I FINALLY got them molded! Below you can see pretty much the whole process of how wax becomes metal, or more aptly named, the lost wax casting process. First, I carve a design out of wax (that green stuff on the left). A mold is then taken of that wax (that clear rectangle thing in the middle). Then you shoot injection wax (that blue stuff on the mold) into the mold. You can see at the bottom of the mold a 'road' that travels to both of the pieces. This 'road' is what the injection wax follows to fill in the design. You then take the blue pieces and attach them to a casting tree where they will be surrounded with investment/plaster, the blue wax is burned away leaving a negative of the design, and then metal is shot into the negative, leaving you with a positive of your design! Isn't it exciting?? Or probably confusing...either way it feels amazing to see my designs finally come to some sort of fruition.

The work doesn't end there though. Now I'll have to get these guys all polished up and pretty. Although I think I'm liking this rough, matte texture the rough casting has got going on. We'll see what happens...as usual, let me get back to you!

Fashion Find: A.L.C

I'm generally not into bold, primary colors but A.L.C does it so well with their resort 2013 collection. It's just the right balance of primary and neutrals.

Shape Jealousy

I'm jealous of Matthew Chamber's shapes yet so inspired by his shape philosophy:

Each sculpture is constructed one part at a time, until each component is layered into a single piece. "The fun", he states, "is discovering how a shape leads to another shape and how they adapt to each other".
